Ochieng was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes in May. The surgeon at Kasarani Regional Medical Center recommended a craniotomy, and He is scheduled for August. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $1,300, and after what our health plan will pay we're still $650 short. my father has been in and out of Kasarani Regional Medical Center since May. The doctors say severe cataracts in both eyes will get worse without a craniotomy. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $1,300 is more than we can find. While we wait, Ochieng struggles with daily life and can't stand for more than ten minutes. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. The recovery period is expected to take about 8 weeks. During that time Ochieng won't be able to stand for more than ten minutes, so the costs keep growing.
