Nimal was diagnosed with a herniated spinal disc in May. The surgeon at Colombo University Hospital recommended a partial thyroidectomy, and He is scheduled for August. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $1,550, and after what my employer's plan will pay we're still $1,100 short. my son has been in and out of Colombo University Hospital since May. The doctors say a herniated spinal disc will get worse without a partial thyroidectomy. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $1,550 is more than we can find. While we wait, Nimal struggles with daily life and can't stand for more than ten minutes. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. The recovery period is expected to take about 10 weeks. During that time Nimal won't be able to stand for more than ten minutes, so the costs keep growing.
