Bellevue
Naomi was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in the right knee in May. The surgeon at Bellevue General Hospital recommended cataract surgery, and She is scheduled for August. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $13,000, and after what the government subsidy will pay we're still $6,550 short. my sister has been in and out of Bellevue General Hospital since May. The doctors say osteoarthritis in the right knee will get worse without cataract surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $13,000 is more than we can find. While we wait, Naomi struggles with daily life and can't look after the children alone. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. The recovery period is expected to take about 6 weeks. During that time Naomi won't be able to look after the children alone, so the costs keep growing. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $6,550 goes: • Hospital stay (5 nights): $3,000 • Post-operative medication: $185 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $2,300 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $530 • Travel and lodging for the family: $535 I'll keep this page updated with receipts as things happen.
