Surgery fund for Maya: spinal decompression surgery in Austin

After a hip fracture that never healed properly, Maya was cleared for spinal decompression surgery, but the bill is more than we can manage.

Austin
In May I was diagnosed with a hip fracture that never healed properly. My surgeon at Austin Orthopedic Institute recommended spinal decompression surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for July. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $10,500, and after what the government subsidy will pay, I'm still $6,250 short. Doctors at Austin Orthopedic Institute told me a hip fracture that never healed properly will get worse without spinal decompression surgery. I work as a seamstress, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $10,500 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a seamstress have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Recovery is expected to take about 5 weeks. I'll not be able to drive during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $6,250 goes: • Travel and lodging for the family: $190 • Hospital stay (5 nights): $3,450 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $460 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $2,000 • Post-operative medication: $150 You're what makes this possible, and I'll never forget it.

Updates from Maya

  1. Update from Austin: I made the first payment toward pre-operative tests and imaging. We're at 23% of the goal. Thank you for believing in us.

  2. Good news. Because of your gifts ($708 in total) I met with the hospital and confirmed the amounts. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.
