In June I was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes. My surgeon at Saint Joseph Hospital recommended cataract surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for September. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $1,100, and after what my insurance will pay, I'm still $650 short. Doctors at Saint Joseph Hospital told me severe cataracts in both eyes will get worse without cataract surgery. I work as a market vendor, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $1,100 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a market vendor have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. The recovery period is expected to take about 5 weeks. I'll not be able to look after the children alone during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $650 goes: • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $420 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $85 • Physiotherapy sessions: $95 • Travel and lodging for the family: $50 Ask me anything below before you decide. I'd rather you were sure. - Krishnan

  • Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Krishnan.

    • Sure. The biggest one is surgeon and anesthesia fees, $420. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. Appreciate you taking the time.

best of luck, Krishnan. Look after yourselves too, caregivers need rest. Put this on a community board in Bronx this morning. Thinking of Durgapur.

    • Stay strong, Krishnan. Get well soon. God bless
