Carmen was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes in January. The surgeon at Barranquilla Regional Medical Center recommended ACL reconstruction, and She is scheduled for May. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $440, and after what our health plan will pay we're still $350 short. my wife has been in and out of Barranquilla Regional Medical Center since January. The doctors say severe cataracts in both eyes will get worse without ACL reconstruction. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $440 is more than we can find. While we wait, Carmen struggles with daily life and can't look after the children alone. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 5 weeks. During that time Carmen won't be able to look after the children alone, so the costs keep growing.
