Allan was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes in June. The surgeon at Ottawa University Hospital recommended valve repair surgery, and He is scheduled for September. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $6,750, and after what my employer's plan will pay we're still $4,700 short. my husband has been in and out of Ottawa University Hospital since June. The doctors say severe cataracts in both eyes will get worse without valve repair surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $6,750 is more than we can find. While we wait, Allan struggles with daily life and can't walk without help. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Recovery is expected to take about 10 weeks. During that time Allan won't be able to walk without help, so the costs keep growing. The money goes straight to the treatment bills, and I'll share the invoices as they're paid so you can see exactly what your gift did. Where the $4,700 goes: • Post-operative medication: $260 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $2,050 • Hospital stay (2 nights): $1,450 • Physiotherapy sessions: $730 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $210 Every share and every dollar helps. - Mercy

  1. Thank you all. We're at 19% now ($882). I'm honestly stunned. I met with the hospital and confirmed the amounts.

  2. Good news. Because of your gifts ($532 in total) I made the first payment toward surgeon and anesthesia fees. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  3. Quick update: $140 raised so far (3%). we've booked the dates and paid the deposit. Receipts coming as soon as I have them.
