Stop the eviction: 3 months of rent for Suresh's family in Mumbai

A final eviction notice arrived last week. Suresh needs $700 to clear the arrears and stay housed in Mumbai.

When the restaurant closed in June, I fell 3 months behind on rent. Last Monday a final eviction notice was taped to my door, and the amount I owe is $700. My landlord has been understanding for a while, but he has now been clear: if the arrears aren't cleared by September, we must leave. I have a teenager still in school at home. Moving isn't just an expense - it would mean new schools, a new commute and no deposit to put down anywhere else. I have started working two part-time jobs, and I'm applying for help from local services, but nothing will arrive in time without the rest of the gap covered here. Funds go to the landlord and nowhere else. Any amount left over after the arrears are cleared will go toward next month's rent. Where the $700 goes: • Rent arrears (3 months): $500 • Late fees and court costs: $40 • First month of rent as a buffer: $160 If you're reading this, thank you.

Updates from Suresh

  1. Good news. Because of your gifts ($475 in total) I made the first payment toward first month of rent as a buffer. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

Hope it all works out, Suresh. Shared it with a few friends. Our whole street has been following this since the weekend. Thinking of Mumbai.
