Zelalem was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in May. The oncology team at the Addis Ababa Oncology Institute has planned 10 rounds of treatment, starting in September. He will be away from work for about 5 weeks.
Zelalem is 26, worked as a tailor until May, and has always been the one who looks after everyone else. Now it's our turn to look after him.
Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, trips to the Addis Ababa Oncology Institute 3 times a week, and the income the family has lost add up quickly.
We've already sold what we could and have begun borrowing for groceries. Every kindness from you takes weight off his shoulders.
Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment.
Where the $500 goes:
• Transport to the Addis Ababa Oncology Institute: $140
• Scans and lab work: $150
• Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $45
• Household costs while unable to work: $165
