Standing with Wafula: colon cancer treatment costs

Wafula is facing colon cancer and the cost of treatment, travel and care at home is far beyond what the family can cover.

Wafula was diagnosed with colon cancer in October. The oncology team at Nairobi University Hospital has planned 12 rounds of treatment, starting in January. He will be away from work for about 7 weeks. Wafula is 37, worked as a taxi driver until October, and has always been the one who looks after everyone else. Now it's our turn to look after him. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, trips to Nairobi University Hospital 3 times a week, and the income the family has lost add up quickly. We've already sold what we could and have begun borrowing for groceries. Every kindness from you takes weight off his shoulders. I'll post every invoice and receipt as an update so donors can follow where each gift goes. Where the $650 goes: • Household costs while unable to work: $230 • Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $95 • Scans and lab work: $160 • Transport to Nairobi University Hospital: $165 Thank you for reading my story. - Nabirye

Updates from Nabirye

  1. Good news. Because of your gifts ($85 in total) I made the first payment toward household costs while unable to work. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  2. Quick update: $75 raised so far (12%). I met with the treatment center and confirmed the amounts. Receipts coming as soon as I have them.
