Thandi was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in July. The oncology team at the Soweto Oncology Institute has planned 10 rounds of treatment, starting in November. She will be away from work for about 12 weeks.
Thandi is 55, worked as a bakery worker until July, and has always been the one who looks after everyone else. Now it's our turn to look after her.
Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, trips to the Soweto Oncology Institute 3 times a week, and the income the family has lost add up quickly.
We've already sold what we could and have begun borrowing for groceries. Every kindness from you takes weight off her shoulders.
Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment.
Where the $600 goes:
• Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $160
• Scans and lab work: $150
• Transport to the Soweto Oncology Institute: $290

Everything on the list is an amount I've been quoted or invoiced. nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team comes first ($160) and I'll update the page as each thing gets paid. Happy to explain more.
