Standing with Omondi: cervical cancer treatment costs

Omondi is facing cervical cancer and the cost of treatment, travel and care at home is far beyond what the family can cover.

Kasarani
In August I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. My oncology team at Kasarani Cancer Centre has planned 10 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in December. I was told to expect about 7 weeks away from work. I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 47, I worked as a hairdresser until August, and I have been the main earner for my household. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to Kasarani Cancer Centre 4 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly. My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries. Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment. Where the $1,950 goes: • Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $1,050 • Scans and lab work: $300 • Transport to Kasarani Cancer Centre: $200 • Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $135 • Household costs while unable to work: $265 Please ask me anything in the questions section. I'll answer honestly and quickly.

Updates from Omondi

  1. Update from Kasarani: I met with the treatment center and confirmed the amounts. We're at 9% of the goal. Thank you for believing in us.

  2. Wanted to say thank you properly. 12% funded and I made the first payment toward nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team.

  3. Thank you all. We're at 12% now ($243). I'm honestly stunned. the plan for nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team is now scheduled.
