Standing with Ochieng: non-Hodgkin lymphoma treatment costs

Ochieng is facing non-Hodgkin lymphoma and the cost of treatment, travel and care at home is far beyond what the family can cover.

In August I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. My oncology team at Thika Regional Medical Center has planned 12 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in October. I was told to expect about 7 weeks away from work. I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 24, I worked as a farmer until August, and I have been the main earner for my household. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to Thika Regional Medical Center 3 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly. My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries. Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment. Where the $650 goes: • Household costs while unable to work: $240 • Scans and lab work: $140 • Transport to Thika Regional Medical Center: $200 • Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $70 Thanks for being kind about this.

  • So sorry you're going through this. Hope this works out for you. I told my book club about it and three of them are giving too. Thinking of Thika
