Standing with Leila: multiple myeloma treatment costs

8 rounds of treatment are planned at Luxor Cancer Centre; we're asking for help with the costs insurance doesn't cover.

In October I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. My oncology team at Luxor Cancer Centre has planned 8 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in February. I was told to expect about 3 weeks away from work. I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 42, I worked as a bus conductor until October, and I have been the main earner for my household. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to Luxor Cancer Centre 5 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly. My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries. Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment. Where the $2,200 goes: • Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $1,500 • Scans and lab work: $240 • Transport to Luxor Cancer Centre: $190 • Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $110 • Household costs while unable to work: $160 Glad we found this place.

      • Hang in there, Leila. Looking forward to the next update. After 25 years in farming I know how hard it's to ask for anything.

It's all in the list in the story. chemotherapy and medication not covered is the big one at $1,500, I'll post a receipt when it's paid. Thanks, that means a lot.

You're not alone. It takes guts to ask. Well done. The breakdown of costs made it easy to trust. Take care.
