Spinal decompression surgery for Verónica: covering what insurance won't

Verónica was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst in February. The surgeon at Durham Community Hospital recommended spinal decompression surgery, and She is scheduled for June. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $8,500, and after what our health plan will pay we're still $4,250 short.
my wife has been in and out of Durham Community Hospital since February. The doctors say a large ovarian cyst will get worse without spinal decompression surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $8,500 is more than we can find.
While we wait, Verónica struggles with daily life and can't work a full shift. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there.
Rehabilitation is expected to take about 6 weeks. During that time Verónica won't be able to work a full shift, so the costs keep growing.
