Rafael was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes in March. The surgeon at Barcelona Regional Medical Center recommended spinal decompression surgery, and He is scheduled for May. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $8,000, and after what our health plan will pay we're still $5,600 short. my father has been in and out of Barcelona Regional Medical Center since March. The doctors say severe cataracts in both eyes will get worse without spinal decompression surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $8,000 is more than we can find. While we wait, Rafael struggles with daily life and can't stand for more than ten minutes. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Recovery is expected to take about 3 weeks. During that time Rafael won't be able to stand for more than ten minutes, so the costs keep growing.
