After a sudden layoff at the construction firm, Sohel fell 3 months behind on rent. Last Tuesday a court summons for non-payment was taped to the door, and the amount owed is $305.
The landlord was understanding for a while, but has now been clear: if the arrears aren't cleared by November, the family must leave.
There are a teenager still in school at home. Moving would mean new schools, a new commute and no deposit to put down anywhere else.
Sohel has started working two part-time jobs, and is applying for help from local services, but nothing will arrive in time without the rest of the gap covered here.
Funds go to the landlord and nowhere else. Any amount left over after the arrears are cleared will go toward next month's rent.
Where the $305 goes:
• Rent arrears (3 months): $280
• Utilities in arrears: $20
• Late fees and court costs: $5

Sending love, Ishrat. I was in a similar spot a few years ago and it did get better. Please keep us posted.
is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Sohel.
Rent arrears (3 months) is $280 of it. Everything else is listed in the story and nothing outside that list comes out of this page. Fair thing to want to know.
Thinking of you and your family, Ishrat. I was in a similar spot a few years ago and it did get better. I told my book club about it and three of them are giving too.
Looking forward to the next update. My neighbor in Regina donated after I showed her your page
Sending good thoughts. Hope this works out for you. After 27 years in engineering I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Greetings from Cần Thơ
