Septoplasty for Walter: covering what insurance won't

Walter was diagnosed with a thyroid nodule that needs removal in July. The surgeon at Düsseldorf University Hospital recommended septoplasty, and He is scheduled for October. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $3,750, and after what our health plan will pay we're still $2,800 short.
my father has been in and out of Düsseldorf University Hospital since July. The doctors say a thyroid nodule that needs removal will get worse without septoplasty. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $3,750 is more than we can find.
While we wait, Walter struggles with daily life and can't walk without help. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there.
Rehabilitation is expected to take about 12 weeks. During that time Walter won't be able to walk without help, so the costs keep growing.
