Restoring the Unity hillside: a volunteer-led project in Santarém
Volunteers are restoring the Unity hillside in Santarém; $950 covers saplings, tools and waste removal.
Anywhere in the world455 views
The Unity hillside has been used as an informal dump for years. This August, 93 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 102 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the city parks department, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $950 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $480
• Tools and protective gear: $170
• Waste removal and skip hire: $230
• Signage and educational materials: $70

Updates from Henrique
Thank you all. We're at 9% now ($85). I'm honestly stunned. I met with the nursery and confirmed the amounts.
Good news. Because of your gifts ($60 in total) I met with the nursery and confirmed the amounts. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

hang in there. Your post was clear and honest. I'm in logistics myself and wanted you to know we're cheering for you. Thinking of Santarém.
Take care. Shared this with my family. Love from Riyadh
Sending love. Great idea, hope you get there. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it.
Praying for you, Henrique. Looking forward to the next update.
More neighborhoods should do this. Love from Düsseldorf.
