Restoring the Unity canal: a volunteer-led project in Riverside
Volunteers are restoring the Unity canal in Riverside; $2,450 covers saplings, tools and waste removal.
🇺🇸 California, United States1,706 views
The Unity canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This May, 96 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 112 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the local forestry office, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $2,450 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $1,550
• Tools and protective gear: $240
• Waste removal and skip hire: $580
• Signage and educational materials: $80
I'll keep this page updated with receipts as things happen.

Thank you all. We're at 17% now ($422). I'm honestly stunned. I met with the nursery and confirmed the amounts.

It takes guts to ask. Well done. Our whole street has been following this since the weekend. Thinking of Riverside
