Restoring the Union riverbank: a volunteer-led project in Mumbai
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Union riverbank needs $300 for saplings and equipment.
🇮🇳 Mumbai, Maharashtra, India294 views
The Union riverbank has been used as an informal dump for years. This July, 106 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 140 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the local forestry office, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage.
Where the $300 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $165
• Signage and educational materials: $20
• Tools and protective gear: $115
If you're reading this, thank you.

Keep going, Radha. Everyone deserves a bit of help sometimes. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected. Blessings
Praying for you, Radha. Projects like this are what make a place worth living in. All the best.
Sending good thoughts. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it. Greetings from Latina
Hope things get better soon. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected. Greetings from San Jose.
You're not alone. Hope the build day goes well, wish I lived closer. After 14 years in engineering I know how hard it's to ask for anything.
