Restoring the Maple hillside: a volunteer-led project in Pretoria
Volunteers are restoring the Maple hillside in Pretoria; $450 covers saplings, tools and waste removal.
🇿🇦 Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa713 views
The Maple hillside has been used as an informal dump for years. This August, 72 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 65 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the municipal water board, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage.
Where the $450 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $250
• Waste removal and skip hire: $160
• Signage and educational materials: $40
Even a small gift gets used right away and I'll thank you myself.

Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Thandi
Everything on the list is an amount I've been quoted or invoiced. native saplings and stakes comes first ($250) and I'll update the page as each thing gets paid.
keep going, Thandi. This could happen to any of us. Put this on a community board in Islamabad this morning. All the best.
Sending love, Thandi. Gave what I could, wish it was more. We're a small family in Houston but we're thinking of you. Take care
Gave what I could, wish it was more. It's not much but it's yours. Greetings from São Paulo!
