Restoring the Freedom riverbank: a volunteer-led project in Luxor
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Freedom riverbank needs $400 for saplings and equipment.
🇪🇬 Egypt894 views
The Freedom riverbank has been used as an informal dump for years. This August, 83 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 191 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the local forestry office, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $400 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $145
• Tools and protective gear: $100
• Waste removal and skip hire: $85
• Signage and educational materials: $70
Even a small gift gets used right away and I'll thank you myself.

Thanks for sharing this, Rima. Hope this works out for you. Sent it to 31 people at work. Love from Kyoto.
Take care. Great idea, hope you get there. We had a similar scare last year, I know what it feels like.
sending strength, Rima. This could happen to any of us. I went through something like this 2 years ago and strangers helped me out.
Wishing you the best. This could happen to any of us. Our whole street has been following this since the weekend. Thinking of Luxor.
You're not alone, Rima. More neighborhoods should do this. Love from Mansoura.
