Restoring Pioneer Beach: a volunteer-led project in Newcastle upon Tyne
A neighborhood-led restoration of Pioneer Beach needs $1,800 for saplings and equipment.
Anywhere in the world1,338 views
Pioneer Beach has been used as an informal dump for years. This September, 35 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 71 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the local forestry office, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $1,800 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $740
• Tools and protective gear: $170
• Waste removal and skip hire: $820
• Signage and educational materials: $70
Ask me anything below before you decide. I'd rather you were sure.
Updates from Gloria
Good news. Because of your gifts ($423 in total) I made the first payment toward signage and educational materials. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

Sending good thoughts. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. It's not much but it's yours. God bless.
Keep going, Gloria. Hope the build day goes well, wish I lived closer. This is the second need I've supported on here and the first that made me cry. Blessings.
