Restoring Liberty Creek: a volunteer-led project in Belo Horizonte
A neighborhood-led restoration of Liberty Creek needs $750 for saplings and equipment.
🇧🇷 Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil686 views
Liberty Creek has been used as an informal dump for years. This April, 36 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 77 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the city parks department, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage.
Where the $750 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $370
• Tools and protective gear: $155
• Waste removal and skip hire: $170
• Signage and educational materials: $55
Ask me anything below before you decide. I'd rather you were sure.
Updates from Manoel
Good news. Because of your gifts ($438 in total) I met with the nursery and confirmed the amounts. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.
Thank you all. We're at 52% now ($388). I'm honestly stunned. the first invoice got paid this week.
