Restoring Jacaranda Creek: a volunteer-led project in Dar es Salaam

Volunteers are restoring Jacaranda Creek in Dar es Salaam; $250 covers saplings, tools and waste removal.

Anywhere in the world544 views
Jacaranda Creek has been used as an informal dump for years. This April, 98 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 54 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good. We have a plan agreed with the city parks department, including native species selected by a local botanist. The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade. All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials. Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage. Where the $250 goes: • Signage and educational materials: $40 • Native saplings and stakes: $125 • Waste removal and skip hire: $85 I never thought I'd be the one asking, and I'm grateful for every bit of support. - Kipchoge

  • Wishing you the best. Shared it with a few friends. After 16 years in nursing I know how hard it's to ask for anything. All the best.

    • Take care, Kipchoge. Everyone deserves a bit of help sometimes. I told my book club about it and three of them are giving too.

      • Thinking of you, Kipchoge. Hope this works out for you. Love from Santos.
