Resettlement support for 9 people arriving in Jacksonville

After fleeing Ethiopia, the Tesfaye family has arrived in Jacksonville with little more than their documents. They need help with a deposit, furniture and the first months.

My family left Ethiopia 10 months ago after we were targeted for our work. We spent time in a camp before we were resettled in Jacksonville. We're a family of six and we're safe, but we arrived with very little. Our resettlement agency has provided 4 months of rent, and that support ends in November. I was an engineer in Ethiopia, and I'm studying the language every evening. Our daughter and son have started school and are doing well. We want nothing more than to be self-sufficient. This fund will help us through the first six months. Funds are managed by the Jacksonville Refugee Support Network, a registered organization, which pays the landlord and suppliers on the family's behalf. Where the $2,100 goes: • Phone and internet for school and job search: $160 • Winter clothing and school supplies: $300 • Beds, table and basic furniture: $1,000 • Language classes and bus passes: $640 With deep gratitude, Michael

Updates from Michael

  1. Thank you all. We're at 67% now ($1,404). I'm honestly stunned. I made the first payment toward beds, table and basic furniture.

  2. We're at 31% thanks to 18 of you. I met with the landlord and confirmed the amounts. More news soon.

Everything on the list is an amount I've been quoted or invoiced. phone and internet for school and job search comes first ($160) and I'll update the page as each thing gets paid. Thanks, that means a lot.

      • Best of luck. Shared this with my family. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected. Thinking of Jacksonville!

          • Thinking of you, Michael. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. I went through something like this 3 years ago and strangers helped me out. Blessings.
