Nairobi
My family left Myanmar 12 months ago after our home was destroyed. We spent time in a camp before we were resettled in Nairobi. We're a family of five and we're safe, but we arrived with very little. Our resettlement agency has provided 2 months of rent, and that support ends in June. I was a shopkeeper in Myanmar, and I'm studying the language every evening. Our daughter and son have started school and are doing well. We want nothing more than to be self-sufficient. This fund will help us through the first six months. Funds are managed by the Nairobi Welcome Table charity, a registered organization, which pays the landlord and suppliers on the family's behalf. Where the $600 goes: • Rent deposit and first month: $260 • Beds, table and basic furniture: $160 • Winter clothing and school supplies: $105 • Language classes and bus passes: $50 • Phone and internet for school and job search: $25 Thanks for reading all this.

  • Stay strong. Your post was clear and honest. After 9 years in customer support I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Thinking of Nairobi.

    • Hope things get better soon. Looking forward to the next update. Put this on a community board in Campinas this morning.

      • Hope things get better soon, Margaret. Everyone deserves a bit of help sometimes. This is the second need I've supported on here and the first that made me cry.
