Plant 4,950 native trees around the Freedom hillside in Johannesburg
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Freedom hillside needs $550 for saplings and equipment.
🇿🇦 Gauteng, South Africa596 views
The Freedom hillside has been used as an informal dump for years. This May, 71 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 119 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the city parks department, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage.
Where the $550 goes:
• Waste removal and skip hire: $115
• Tools and protective gear: $95
• Native saplings and stakes: $340
Even a small gift gets used right away and I'll thank you myself.

Thinking of you and your family. This could happen to any of us. After 29 years in logistics I know how hard it's to ask for anything. All the best.
