Palate reconstruction surgery for Neema: covering what insurance won't
Neema needs palate reconstruction surgery at Dar es Salaam Community Hospital and the family is $1,050 short of the hospital's estimate.

Neema was diagnosed with a hip fracture that never healed properly in February. The surgeon at Dar es Salaam Community Hospital recommended palate reconstruction surgery, and She is scheduled for May. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $1,500, and after what the public health scheme will pay we're still $1,050 short.
my mother has been in and out of Dar es Salaam Community Hospital since February. The doctors say a hip fracture that never healed properly will get worse without palate reconstruction surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $1,500 is more than we can find.
While we wait, Neema struggles with daily life and can't drive. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there.
Rehabilitation is expected to take about 6 weeks. During that time Neema won't be able to drive, so the costs keep growing.
I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section.
Where the $1,050 goes:
• Travel and lodging for the family: $70
• Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $460
• Physiotherapy sessions: $65
• Pre-operative tests and imaging: $85
• Hospital stay (5 nights): $370
I'll keep this page updated with receipts as things happen.
