Palate reconstruction surgery for Anna: covering what insurance won't

In May I was diagnosed with a cleft palate needing repair. My surgeon at Gothenburg Community Hospital recommended palate reconstruction surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for July. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $11,500, and after what my insurance will pay, I'm still $8,000 short. Doctors at Gothenburg Community Hospital told me a cleft palate needing repair will get worse without palate reconstruction surgery. I work as a security guard, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $11,500 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a security guard have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 4 weeks. I'll not be able to walk without help during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $8,000 goes: • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $460 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $3,950 • Travel and lodging for the family: $320 • Hospital stay (4 nights): $3,270 I never thought I'd be the one asking, and I'm grateful for every bit of support. - Anna
