Kamini is the first person in the family to go to university. She is studying a diploma in hospitality management at Johannesburg State College, and is one semester away from graduating. She has worked as a warehouse packer to pay the way, but this term the hours were cut and there's an unpaid balance of $1,200.
The registrar has said Kamini can't enroll for the next term until the balance is cleared. Kamini has a top-ten-percent average, and an academic advisor has written in support.
Graduating means a stable job and the chance to support the younger siblings. Without enrolling this term Kamini would lose her place and scholarship eligibility.
Kamini isn't asking for a handout - She wants to finish what She started and help the next student.
Everything raised goes to the university's accounts office toward the outstanding balance and the final term's fees.
Where the $1,200 goes:
• Final term tuition: $500
• Textbooks and materials: $40
• Outstanding tuition balance: $660
