In August I was diagnosed with a torn ligament that needs reconstruction. My surgeon at Iztapalapa Orthopedic Institute recommended palate reconstruction surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for November. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $1,700, and after what our health plan will pay, I'm still $850 short. Doctors at Iztapalapa Orthopedic Institute told me a torn ligament that needs reconstruction will get worse without palate reconstruction surgery. I work as a care assistant, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $1,700 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a care assistant have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 4 weeks. I'll not be able to work a full shift during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $850 goes: • Post-operative medication: $85 • Physiotherapy sessions: $140 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $625 Thanks for reading all this.

  • Wishing you the best, Mateo. Gave what I could, wish it was more. After 17 years in social work I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Thinking of Iztapalapa.

    • Hope the doctors have good news. Please keep us posted. All the best.
