Nairobi
For five years the neighborhood has asked for a solar-powered water pump. This year a group of 20 volunteers, including a retired civil engineer, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for Acacia Primary School, but no funding. We have received donated soil and plants, and the remaining cost is $450. It will serve about 455 people, including young people who have nowhere safe to play. We'll hold a build day in September and everyone is invited. We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos. All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance. Where the $450 goes: • Materials: $320 • Permits and inspections: $30 • Safety equipment and signage: $45 • Tools hire and delivery: $55 If you can't give, please share this page. It does reach people. - Mwanaisha

    • Rooting for you, Mwanaisha. It takes guts to ask. Well done.

      • You're not alone. Projects like this are what make a place worth living in. Put this on a community board in Leeds this morning. Thinking of Nairobi.
