For three years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 15 volunteers, including a retired civil engineer, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Maple vacant lot, but no funding. We have received donated volunteer hours worth about $220, and the remaining cost is $350. It will serve about 444 people, including children, seniors and people with disabilities. We'll hold a build day in September and everyone is invited. We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos. Funds are spent only on materials, permits and safety equipment; all labor is volunteered. Where the $350 goes: • Safety equipment and signage: $65 • Permits and inspections: $20 • Materials: $265 Glad we found this place.
