Let's build a free library and reading room together in Springfield
A community-led a free library and reading room at the old Freedom bus depot that will serve 443 neighbors.
🇺🇸 Illinois, United States3,689 views
For five years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 22 volunteers, including the neighborhood football club, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the old Freedom bus depot, but no funding.
We have received donated tools, and the remaining cost is $2,650.
It will serve about 443 people, including elderly neighbors living alone. We'll hold a build day in September and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
Funds are spent only on materials, permits and safety equipment; all labor is volunteered.
Where the $2,650 goes:
• Tools hire and delivery: $185
• Materials: $2,050
• Permits and inspections: $415
Ask me anything below before you decide. I'd rather you were sure.

best of luck, Zhe. Shared it with a few friends. This is the second need I've supported on here and the first that made me cry. Thinking of Springfield.
Take care. Your post was clear and honest. It's not much but it's yours. Blessings
Hope you get there. I hope September is when things finally get easier. Greetings from Ahmedabad
Thinking of you and your family. This could happen to any of us. Put this on a community board in Abuja this morning. Greetings from Abuja.
Hope things get better soon, Zhe. Your post was clear and honest. Love from Lagos.
