Leah's hip replacement surgery can't wait - please help us cover the bill

After a large ovarian cyst, Leah was cleared for hip replacement surgery, but the bill is more than we can manage.

In April I was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst. My surgeon at Philadelphia University Hospital recommended hip replacement surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for July. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $12,250, and after what the government subsidy will pay, I'm still $6,100 short. Doctors at Philadelphia University Hospital told me a large ovarian cyst will get worse without hip replacement surgery. I work as a care assistant, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $12,250 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a care assistant have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 4 weeks. I'll not be able to walk without help during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $6,100 goes: • Travel and lodging for the family: $210 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $4,750 • Post-operative medication: $310 • Physiotherapy sessions: $830 Thanks for being kind about this.

What exactly is the $6,100 for?

    • Leah RodriguezOwnerAnswer

Sure. The biggest one is travel and lodging for the family, $210. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. Fair thing to want to know.

  • Thanks for sharing this. Wishing Leah a smooth procedure and a full recovery. Read this on the bus and kept thinking about it all day

    • Is there anything that isn't money that would help Leah?

      • Leah RodriguezOwnerAnswer

Sharing the link is the biggest thing. And if you know anything about travel and lodging for the family, advice is welcome too. Good question.

    • Best of luck. Looking forward to the next update. I'll check back for the next update. God bless.

      • You're not alone. This could happen to any of us. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected.

        • Wishing you the best. Gave what I could, wish it was more. Put this on a community board in Nakhon Ratchasima this morning.
