Laparoscopic endometriosis surgery for Joseph: covering what insurance won't

Joseph needs laparoscopic endometriosis surgery at Los Angeles University Hospital and the family is $6,300 short of the hospital's estimate.

In February I was diagnosed with a cleft palate needing repair. My surgeon at Los Angeles University Hospital recommended laparoscopic endometriosis surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for June. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $8,000, and after what the government subsidy will pay, I'm still $6,300 short. Doctors at Los Angeles University Hospital told me a cleft palate needing repair will get worse without laparoscopic endometriosis surgery. I work as a care assistant, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $8,000 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a care assistant have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 7 weeks. I'll not be able to walk without help during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $6,300 goes: • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $2,650 • Hospital stay (4 nights): $2,050 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $360 • Post-operative medication: $280 • Physiotherapy sessions: $480 • Travel and lodging for the family: $480 If you're reading this, thank you. - Joseph

Updates from Joseph

  1. Quick update: $2,159 raised so far (34%). I met with the hospital and confirmed the amounts. Receipts coming as soon as I have them.

  2. Good news. Because of your gifts ($2,024 in total) the plan for hospital stay is now scheduled. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  3. Update from Los Angeles: we've started the first stage. We're at 16% of the goal. Thank you for believing in us.
