Knee replacement surgery for Quỳnh: covering what insurance won't

A scheduled knee replacement surgery in May is out of reach without help covering $7,600 of the cost.

In January I was diagnosed with gallstones with repeated infections. My surgeon at Newcastle Regional Medical Center recommended knee replacement surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for May. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $10,750, and after what my employer's plan will pay, I'm still $7,600 short. Doctors at Newcastle Regional Medical Center told me gallstones with repeated infections will get worse without knee replacement surgery. I work as a restaurant cook, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $10,750 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a restaurant cook have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. The recovery period is expected to take about 10 weeks. I'll not be able to walk without help during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. The money goes straight to the treatment bills, and I'll share the invoices as they're paid so you can see exactly what your gift did. Where the $7,600 goes: • Hospital stay (4 nights): $2,850 • Physiotherapy sessions: $400 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $380 • Post-operative medication: $460 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $3,510 Thanks for being kind about this.

Updates from Quỳnh

  1. Wanted to say thank you properly. 45% funded and I met with the hospital and confirmed the amounts.

  2. Good news. Because of your gifts ($2,513 in total) the plan for post-operative medication is now scheduled. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  3. We're at 12% thanks to 17 of you. the plan for surgeon and anesthesia fees is now scheduled. More news soon.
