Knee replacement surgery for Mugisha: covering what insurance won't

Mugisha was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in the right knee in June. The surgeon at Kisumu Regional Medical Center recommended knee replacement surgery, and He is scheduled for September. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $1,450, and after what the public health scheme will pay we're still $1,000 short.
my husband has been in and out of Kisumu Regional Medical Center since June. The doctors say osteoarthritis in the right knee will get worse without knee replacement surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $1,450 is more than we can find.
While we wait, Mugisha struggles with daily life and can't drive. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there.
Recovery is expected to take about 4 weeks. During that time Mugisha won't be able to drive, so the costs keep growing.
