Knee replacement surgery for Josefa: covering what insurance won't
After osteoarthritis in the right knee, Josefa was cleared for knee replacement surgery, but the bill is more than we can manage.

Josefa was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in the right knee in May. The surgeon at Madrid Community Hospital recommended knee replacement surgery, and She is scheduled for August. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $2,750, and after what my employer's plan will pay we're still $2,050 short.
my mother has been in and out of Madrid Community Hospital since May. The doctors say osteoarthritis in the right knee will get worse without knee replacement surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $2,750 is more than we can find.
While we wait, Josefa struggles with daily life and can't walk without help. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there.
Recovery is expected to take about 12 weeks. During that time Josefa won't be able to walk without help, so the costs keep growing.
