Keep a roof over Maverick's head in Birmingham

After a sudden layoff, Maverick is 3 months behind on rent and has a 10-day notice to quit from the landlord.

After a car accident that kept me from work for 10 weeks, I fell 3 months behind on rent. Last Monday a 10-day notice to quit was taped to my door, and the amount I owe is $4,150. My landlord has been understanding for a while, but he has now been clear: if the arrears aren't cleared by March, we must leave. I have a teenager still in school at home. Moving isn't just an expense - it would mean new schools, a new commute and no deposit to put down anywhere else. I have started working two part-time jobs, and I'm applying for help from local services, but nothing will arrive in time without the rest of the gap covered here. The money will be paid directly to the landlord and I'll upload the receipt once it's done. Where the $4,150 goes: • Rent arrears (3 months): $2,850 • Late fees and court costs: $230 • Utilities in arrears: $260 • First month of rent as a buffer: $810 Thanks for being kind about this.

Thanks for sharing this, Maverick. I hope your landlord gives you a bit more time while this comes together. My daughter saw me on my phone and now she wants to give her pocket money.

Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. I'm in accounting myself and wanted you to know we're cheering for you. Thinking of Birmingham.

Gave what I could, wish it was more. I told my book club about it and three of them are giving too. God bless!
