After a sudden layoff at the bakery, I fell 5 months behind on rent. Last Wednesday a notice to vacate was taped to my door, and the amount I owe is $3,850.
My landlord has been understanding for a while, but he has now been clear: if the arrears aren't cleared by October, we must leave.
I have three school-aged children at home. Moving isn't just an expense - it would mean new schools, a new commute and no deposit to put down anywhere else.
I have started working evenings as a cleaner, and I'm applying for help from local services, but nothing will arrive in time without the rest of the gap covered here.
Funds go to the landlord and nowhere else. Any amount left over after the arrears are cleared will go toward next month's rent.
Where the $3,850 goes:
• Rent arrears (5 months): $2,700
• Late fees and court costs: $250
• Utilities in arrears: $200
• First month of rent as a buffer: $700

How is Katherine doing now?
thinking of you and your family, Katherine. Shared it with a few friends. My late mom used to say help given quietly counts double. Thinking of London
Sending love, Katherine. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did
thinking of you. Everyone deserves a bit of help sometimes. After 12 years in social work I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Greetings from Oakland.
Take care, Katherine. Rent stress is the worst. Hope this helps. I told my book club about it and three of them are giving too. God bless.
Wishing you the best, Katherine. Everyone deserves a bit of help sometimes. Put this on a community board in Brooklyn this morning.
