Justice shouldn't depend on a bank balance: Todd's asylum application
An asylum application deadline is approaching and Todd can't afford the lawyer.
🇺🇸 Bakersfield, California, United States652 views
I'm facing an asylum application. My hearing is scheduled for January, and the filing fees and the lawyer's retainer come to $2,750. I have been told by three legal-aid offices that their waiting list is longer than my deadline.
I have all of my paperwork ready, and my caseworker at Bakersfield Welcome Centre has confirmed that my case is valid.
If I miss the deadline I could lose my right to stay with my family and my job. My children were born here and this is the only home they know.
I'll share any non-sensitive updates as the case moves along.
Funds cover only the filing fees, translations and attorney retainer.
Where the $2,750 goes:
• Filing and biometrics fees: $460
• Certified translations and document copies: $110
• Attorney retainer: $2,180
Every share and every dollar helps.

Take care, Todd. Looking forward to the next update. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it. Thinking of Bakersfield.
keep going, Todd. It takes guts to ask. Well done. Take care
Thinking of you. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it
this could happen to any of us. My late mom used to say help given quietly counts double. Take care.
Stay strong, Todd. Looking forward to the next update. Love from Petrópolis.
