Justice shouldn't depend on a bank balance: Anna's asylum application
An asylum application deadline is approaching and Anna cannot afford the lawyer.
Anywhere in the world2,245 views
Anna is facing an asylum application. The hearing is scheduled for August, and the filing fees and the lawyer's retainer come to $1,500. Three legal-aid offices have said their waiting lists are longer than the deadline.
Anna has all the paperwork ready, and a caseworker at the Derry Community Legal Centre has confirmed that the case is valid.
If the deadline is missed Anna could lose the right to stay with the family and the job. The children were born here and this is the only home they know.
The money goes to the immigration attorney's trust account and the court filing office. I'll upload receipts with sensitive details removed.
Where the $1,500 goes:
• Certified translations and document copies: $220
• Attorney retainer: $1,100
• Court-appointed interpreter and travel: $180
If you're reading this, thank you.
Updates from Ezekiel
Thank you all. We're at 15% now ($225). I'm honestly stunned. I made the first payment toward certified translations and document copies.
7% there. I met with the attorney and confirmed the amounts. Thank you.
