In December I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. My oncology team at the Mombasa Oncology Institute has planned 12 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in April. I was told to expect about 7 weeks away from work. I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 39, I worked as a bakery worker until December, and I have been the main earner for my household. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to the Mombasa Oncology Institute 3 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly. My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries. Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment. Where the $850 goes: • Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $135 • Household costs while unable to work: $340 • Transport to the Mombasa Oncology Institute: $125 • Scans and lab work: $250 Thanks for reading all this.
