In March I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. My oncology team at Newcastle upon Tyne University Hospital has planned 8 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in May. I was told to expect about 5 weeks away from work. I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 49, I worked as a shop owner until March, and I have been the main earner for my household. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to Newcastle upon Tyne University Hospital 4 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly. My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries. Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment. Where the $9,700 goes: • Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $5,500 • Household costs while unable to work: $1,850 • Scans and lab work: $1,650 • Transport to Newcastle upon Tyne University Hospital: $700 Please ask me anything in the questions section.
