Houston flash flood relief - the Sunrise neighborhood

The flash flood damaged 82 homes in the Sunrise neighborhood. We are raising funds for repairs, supplies and temporary shelter.

The flash flood hit the Sunrise neighborhood on 19 August. My home was one of 82 damaged, and 14 families are still in temporary shelter at the local school gym. The first few days we shared what little we had. Now the cleanup has started, but we've no money for materials and winter or the rainy season is coming. Schools in the area have been closed, and the clinic lost its cold storage for vaccines. We're a small community of working families who have never asked for help before. We have formed a volunteer committee, and I'm the treasurer, so I'll post receipts for everything we buy. We buy supplies locally and in bulk, so the money goes further. Receipts and photos will be posted in updates. Where the $3,900 goes: • Bedding, blankets and mattresses: $570 • Clean water and purification supplies: $660 • Roofing sheets and timber: $2,670 I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to. - Soledad

Updates from Soledad

  1. Thank you all. We're at 30% now ($1,168). I'm honestly stunned. the first invoice got paid this week.

  2. Good news. Because of your gifts ($866 in total) I met with the suppliers and confirmed the amounts. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  3. Quick update: $581 raised so far (15%). I made the first payment toward bedding, blankets and mattresses. Receipts coming as soon as I have them.
