Hip replacement surgery for Stijn: covering what insurance won't

In March I was diagnosed with a herniated spinal disc. My surgeon at Amsterdam University Hospital recommended hip replacement surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for June. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $11,000, and after what the public health scheme will pay, I'm still $5,450 short.
