Hip replacement surgery for Klaus: covering what insurance won't
Klaus needs hip replacement surgery at Saint Francis Hospital and the family is $5,200 short of the hospital's estimate.

Klaus was diagnosed with an aortic valve defect in April. The surgeon at Saint Francis Hospital recommended hip replacement surgery, and He is scheduled for June. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $8,750, and after what the public health scheme will pay we're still $5,200 short.
my husband has been in and out of Saint Francis Hospital since April. The doctors say an aortic valve defect will get worse without hip replacement surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $8,750 is more than we can find.
While we wait, Klaus struggles with daily life and can't climb stairs. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there.
Recovery is expected to take about 5 weeks. During that time Klaus won't be able to climb stairs, so the costs keep growing.
I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section.
Where the $5,200 goes:
• Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $2,550
• Hospital stay (3 nights): $1,050
• Pre-operative tests and imaging: $270
• Post-operative medication: $210
• Physiotherapy sessions: $700
• Travel and lodging for the family: $420

Sure. The biggest one is surgeon and anesthesia fees, $2,550. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. Good question.
